The void and oneness

Trance

Hypnosis, certain audible frequencies, meditation, dance, and breathwork all open a gateway to a twilight zone, a relaxed state somewhere between waking and dreaming where we still perceive consciously and in which a stream of images, impressions, feelings, and revelations can unfold.

This state where we transition to slower brainwaves is called trance and opens up beautiful and intimate experiences in which we journey inwardly to our subconsciousness or outwardly to our higher consciousness.

In these moments of the void – moments of phi, we feel our soul and understand that we are pure vibration.

In trance we notice an increased perception as well as an expansion of the consciousness to otherwise unaware mental, emotional, and physical programs and have the possibility to release or adapt them. The span of attention is very focused and the response to external stimuli can be either totally switched off or extremely diminished.

An excursion to our brain and why it is so healthy to enter the state of trance

When the cells of our brain communicate with each other they transmit on their contact levels (synapses) impulses in the form of small electrical currents which can be measured as an electromagnetic signal. The frequency (number of times a wave repeats itself within a second) of our brainwaves can be measured by an EEG (electroencephalograph) in Hz. There are five frequency bands classified:

Gamma higher than 30(Hz)

Beta (13-30Hz)

Alpha (8-12 Hz)

Theta (4-8 Hz)

Delta (less than 4 Hz)

Delta frequencies are associated with the deepest levels of relaxation and restorative, healing, dreamless sleep.

Theta waves enhance creativity, intuition, (day-)dreaming, and give us access to memories, emotions and sensations. They can be measured during internal focus, meditation, and spiritual practices. Theta connects us to our subconscious mind and the spheres of deep trance, of oneness. These waves especially allow for integration of trauma as well as mental, emotional, and physical healing to take place.

Alpha waves bridge the gap between the conscious to the subconscious and are the gate to trance. They are predominant when we feel relaxed, calm and at ease. Alpha frequencies can be measured in light states of trance and help us to coordinate mentally as well as accomplish tasks with focus and efficiency.

Beta frequencies show that our focus is directed to the outer world when we are alert. Low frequency beta waves are predominant while solving analytical problems, making decisions, and intensely processing information. Higher beta frequencies were found when a person is stressed out, restless or anxious – when your inner critic is highly active.

Gamma waves appear at the fast end of the spectrum and can oscillate up to 100 Hz. In these moments the brain is highly active and mystical and transcendent experiences of oneness can occur.  Elevated gamma frequencies can be found in the brain of yogis while meditating but also during the baseline measurements of their everyday life activities. This shows that meditation on a regular basis has a positive transformational effect on the brain, on our awareness and the frequency of our thoughts.

Beta brainwave activity and our modern lifestyle

Our modern society and a stressful lifestyle produce elongated phases of beta brainwave activity. We are in a constant survival mode which in the long run leads to anxiety, aggression, depression, burn out etc. The world of trance induced by mediation, hypnosis, sound, breathwork but also endurance sports and dancing helps us to stay balanced, healthy, and happy. It brings inner clarity and supports us in deciphering and understanding who we are.
